SAT® vs. ACT
Choosing between the SAT® and ACT is one of the major decisions in your college application journey. While both exams are accepted by U.S. colleges and universities, they differ in format, scoring and testing experience. This SAT® vs. ACT comparison guide explores the differences between the two tests to help you make a confident choice and better prepare for test day.
SAT® vs. ACT Test Comparison
Before you can choose a test, you need to understand the difference between the SAT® and the ACT. The tests reflect different approaches to measuring your readiness.
Test Duration
The SAT® is fully digital and takes 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete. It's broken into 64 minutes for the Reading and Writing section and 70 minutes for the Math section.
The ACT takes 2 hours and 5 minutes. It includes 35 minutes for the English section, 50 minutes for the math section and 40 minutes for the Reading section. If you take the optional Science and essay Writing section, it will add 40 minutes to your time.
Test Sections
The SAT® combines the Reading and Writing sections and provides a separate Math section.
The ACT takes a more compartmentalized approach, dividing its content into:
- English
- Math
- Reading
- Optional Science section
The SAT® weaves science-based questions and real-world scenarios into its sections. The ACT provides an optional science section. If science is your strongest subject, the test gives you a dedicated arena to prove it.
SAT® vs. ACT Score Comparison
The SAT® scores on a scale of 400 to 1600, combining your performance across the Reading and Writing and Math sections. The ACT uses a composite scale from 1 to 36, averaging your scores across its four individual tests.
A SAT® score of 1200 is roughly equivalent to a 25 on the ACT. A strong SAT® score of 1340 averages around a 29 on the ACT. If you were to push into highly competitive territory with a 1500 on the SAT®, you're looking at a 34 on the ACT. At the very top, a near-perfect 1540 SAT® score corresponds to a 35 on the ACT.
These benchmarks give you a framework, but every student's situation is different.
Which Test Is Right for You?
Both the SAT® and ACT are widely accepted by colleges and universities, and admissions teams generally do not favor one exam over the other. The better choice comes down to your testing preferences and strengths.
The SAT® will likely be a better fit for you if you prefer more time per question and a fully digital testing experience. The ACT may appeal to students who are comfortable working at a faster pace and prefer content divided into separate subject areas.
The best way to determine which test suits you is to experience both formats. Taking practice tests can help you evaluate your pacing, performance and comfort level before committing to one exam.
